Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. Hepatitis A, B and C viruses can be transmitted during sexual intercourse, and are considerably more resistant and contagious than HIV. For men who have sex with men in particular, it's important to protect themselves against infection by getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, and to reduce the risk of contracting hepatitis C:

  • Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B
  • Change condoms or fisting gloves every time you change partners.
  • Never share straws, syringes, toothbrushes, razor blades, sex toys, lubricant or use banknotes for snorting.

Hepatitis and HIV

Hepatitis can progress more rapidly and severely in HIV-positive people.

HIV-positive people who are simultaneously infected with hepatitis C have around ten times more hepatitis C virus in their blood than non-HIV carriers. In addition, liver damage (due to hepatitis) develops more rapidly the more advanced the HIV infection.
